RESPONSE TO 100 CLICKS BOOK

Life members  & Committee

The response to the book 100 Clicks shows that a lot of people are interested in the Tasmanian Motor Cycle Club’s history.

The book also pointed out that so much of the Club’s history is not stored where it can be easily access or simply lost. So the list of committee members is a list of those that History Officer Ken Young has been able to find from many different places. It is far from complete but just a snap shot of some of the people who have guided the club over its first 100 years.

The list of life members hopefully is complete but also there is no definitive list held by the club. Young is willing to accept that someone has been missed and would be happy to investigate any additions that may be suggested.

Just a name may not mean much to some so a very short profile is added under the list. The actual year of induction for some has yet to be confirmed hence the blank spots. Also even Young doesn’t know much about some and is yet to add the profile.

The Committee’s

1905

The report of the 1910 AGM mentioned there were still many of the original 18 members of the TAC at that meeting. The list was Messrs. G.D. Gleadow, P.C. Smith. George M. Jackson, T.”Sim.” King, A.C. Ferrall, P.G. Harrison, Charles Saul, C.F. Monds, S. Spurling jun, A.K. Applegate and the writer (C.M. Dyer). Not at the meeting and known to be an original member were Dr Haines, Rev. H.B. Atkinson, Thomas Archer and C.F. Heathcote. That accounts for 15 of the original members. Add to that one or three Kings and that should cover the original membership.

It was a staggering collection of present and future influential figures around town. C. Heathcote owned the Beaconsfield Mine, George Gleadow was the Chief Area

Manager at the Launceston branch of the National Bank of Tasmania; W. Gibson JP owned Scone (Eskleigh) and Woodhall and Thomas Archer JP owned Woolmers; Phillip Fysh Junior (P.O. Fysh and Co. importers) was the son of Sir P.O. Fysh who had been state premier twice and had had a short term in federal politics; John Hart was the proprietor of The Daily Telegraph. Doctors Charles Parker and Charles Pike were GP’s and Dr. R. McClinton was a dentist. F. Gunn was listed in the phone book as (Crisp and Gunn Ltd.); G. Waterhouse JP (Ritchie and Parker) was a member of a leading law firm and Bruce Tevelein was the local manager for Launceston Savings and Loans Society On the bike side Charles Monds was a son of leading flour mill company Monds and Son’s; W (Bill) King was the son of John King; Percy Harrison (tyre dealer and) an original club member; George Jackson (Hall and Jackson Garage) later the company was to become G.M. Jackson the State Ford distributor; Cecil Dyer (now believed to be “Spark”); Stephen Spurling joined his father and latter son in setting up Spurling Photographic, one of Launceston’s most successful retail photo shops for many years; and A. Applegate the manager of Scott and Griffiths Brewery.
